HowTo: Air filter Replacement |

I'm not a big fan of the stock air filter on any car. I find them pretty junky and restrictive, especially as most are made
of paper and get dirty quickly. I usually chose to put a nice "rechargable" filter in that I cam maintain on my own.
This guide shows how to take apart the stock airbox and replace the filter with one manufactured by K&N, as well as remove the
weird restrictor frame. Although I will not be doing further modifications I will discuss where I see added value for airflow
if you wanted to cut holes in the box, much like people have been doing on their MKIV's airboxes for years.
Equipment:
Tools:
Installation:
First step is to remove the screws that hold the airbox together so you can open it up:
You can see the screws on the side from this angle:
Pop the top off, it's not that hard and there's plenty of room even with the MAF plugged in:
Remove the "screen" and filter:
Since the filter "faces" down, the bottom is where you'd likely
want to swiss cheese the box if you were looking to add airflow. Also the side
facing the front of the car on the bottom right side of the box. (Bottom right side being
the corner that is low and on the driver side when the box is in the car.)
The areas are highlighted with an orange box, as with the MkIV swisscheese mod
it's not really all that precise, just drill holes on the cold side of the
engine bay.
Put the new filter in, close it back up and reapply screws. Done!
