HowTo: Dual Alarm LED Install
Last updated: 4/09/2008

I like blue.  'nuff said.  This is something I've wanted to do since I got the car but was being lazy about.  Also to the people on what used to be www.club18t.com that wanted me to hurry, here it is.  *bastards* ;)

Equipment:

  • 3mm 3.3v LED
  • Solder
  • Quick set epoxy

Tools:

  • Torx set
  • Dremel to cut the LED housing
  • Screwdrivers
  • Soldering iron
  • "nubby" screwdrivers.  You know, the really really short ones.

Installation:

It isn't that hard to take the door off.  I circled the approximate locations of the screws and torx bolts that hold it in place.  To get to the ones behind the window buttons/handle you pull off the INSIDE piece of the handle and then pull the window button unit up.  It snaps off.

Now pull the door up and whatever it takes to get the thing off.  Be gentle though.  I broke a snap but the thing doesn't rattle or not stay in place so pfft to that snap....  Unplug everything.  You can be hardcore and leave it on but you'll be sorry, it would be way too much of a pain in the arse to work on it without totally removing the door cover.  Take the LED housing out by pushing the stick out clips in and making it go up through the top.  Not INTO the door....  Cut the wires off so you can put the new LED in.  I did a bit more so I could test the voltage but you don't need to do that legwork since it's done.  :)

Dremel time!  Carefully cut out the sorta round part that has the LED.  It was a pain in the butt.  Either this or buy one for $20 from a guy on vortex but the whole point is to DIY with ghetto OEM parts, no?  ;)

Now solder the new LED to the cable.  The longer wire off an LED is the positive and again, in my car PURPLE was positive.

Electrical tape....

Using quick set epoxy I recreated the "shell" around the LED wires.  This holds the LED in place and prevents water from reaching the wires.  Or something....

Now before you put the door back on plug the light in and close the door.  Arm the alarm.  Your light should blink blue now.  If not, then you should make sure the soldering was OK, and that you are in fact in *your* car.  Dunno about some of you guys.... ;)

Then put the door back on, careful with the lock I thought I broke mine.  Turns out I didn't which is good or there wouldn't be a howto.  heh...

Enjoy the comments, everyone double takes when they see the blue and frankly I think it looks a hell of a lot better than the dull red blinking light that the car comes with!

Oh, as for a pic of the light no way.  I tried like 50 times and could never time it right.  Blargh!
