HowTo: Rear Fog Light Install
Last updated: 4/09/2008

This is a fun mod, very easy and you get to see the results as soon as you plug the light in.

Plus it is actually useful in bad weather! It is legal to have one rear fog light as far as I know, and with the increased visibility it offers (and the fact that it's a good Saturday activity) I figured it was worth the $5 in parts. :)

Equipment:

  • VW Fuse block wire OEM part 000-979-227K
  • 20 ft or so 20gauge wire (braided, don't get solid copper core wire!)
  • Rear Bulb (Over at www.impexfap.com the part number is #N0177322)
  • YOU HAVE TO HAVE A EUROSWITCH INSTALLED OR THIS WILL NOT WORK

Tools:

  • Flathead screwdriver.
  • Needle nose pliars.
  • Soldiering Iron
  • Something to shove wire under the panels with
  • Star ratchet (for front panels)

Installation:

Step one is to cut the fuse block wire in half and soldier it to the end of the wire you are running to the back of the car. I used some nice shrink wrap over the soldier joint but you can use electrical tape.

Pull out the Euroswitch, push the knob in and turn it clockwise. Then pull. It's easier if you take the switch off the harness as shown. Take about 25ft of wire and cut it, then run it through the hole where the Euroswitch was. 25ft is a lot but it's better to have too much than too little wire when you get to the other end....

Pull the side access hatch off where the fuse block is.

Using the star key take the bottom two bolts off the left panel and pull it off. Don't worry about the big metal one that will not get in our way.

Take the dead petal off.

Run the line down and behind the hood latch. Start running it under the plastic runner. You can pop it off the clips and do what I did. I ran the wire inbetween the carpet and the fabric under it, this helps reduce any chance of vibration.

Don't laugh the damn thing worked... heh....
foglight06.jpg

Just pull the bottom of the belt part out a bit and it goes right under....
foglight07.jpg

Pull the back seat forward, and the backrest forward, and pull the panel off.
foglight08.jpg

This is where the wire is going to run to the trunk.
foglight09.jpg

Pull the trunk lining off and after you shove the wire in from behind the seat you can grab it and pull through.

Zip ties are good. I also twist tied the wire in the rear driver side because a big line of stuff was under the panel. Nothing like that in front but like I said, just run the wire inbetween the carpet and other fabric and there won't be any chance of vibration.

Open this thing up, and pull the light housing cover off. Then pull the cover out (what a pain in the ass....) and put the bulb in. I took the trunk mat and plastic/metal cover panel out so that I could really pull the carpet away from the light housing to get to it. Just be careful when you put the plastic/metal thing back on because it's sharp as hell and you have to smoosh the weather stripping back on it.
foglight014.jpg

Now soldier the other end of the fuse block wire to the wire you just ran. You can cut the slack once you know how much you need to run the wire. Also note that there is a light above the light housing shining down in the trunk. Try to run the wire AROUND this, it gets hot! Plug the wire in the last slot next to the orange ground wire. At least, for my 2003 that's where I plugged it in....

Hot fog light action!
