HowTo: Short Throw Shifter Install
Last updated: 4/09/2008

Equipment:

  • Autotech *or* AudiTT Short Throw Shifter
  • WD40

Tools:

  • 13mm Socket w/ 1 foot extension
  • Nice long pliars

Thanks to Exit109GTI for the advice on installing this.

Installation:

NOTE: This install is for 2002+ VW's, the old ones do NOT have the clip I talk about. You just carefully pop the connectors off in older models, no clip!

The worst part of this install is the frustration of getting the stock shifter off the damn car. Otherwise it's pretty easy. Here is the stock setup:

The clips that hold on the two lines that plug onto the shifter are easy to get off:

So take all three clips off. Here are all the parts removed so you can take the old shifter out. Three clips an alignment thingy (the black part).

Now you have to take the 13mm bolt off the shifter, and then the fun begins. Spray the "star pattern" with WD40. Walk away for 5 minutes so it can get into the threads. Now go back and rock the old shifter back and forth. Spray more WD40 if you have to. I ended up using a long ratchet extension and a hammer (CAREFULLY!) to get the stock piece loose. WD40 alone didn't do it. Try to clean up all the spray after you do get the old one off.

Now, look at the Autotech or AudiTT short throw, you can see star pattern threads but there is a flat section that lets you know how to line up the shifter on the bolt. The bolt on the car is tricky because it doesn't have a flat area like you'd think but two "star pieces" are together so that when you look down at the thing you can see a joined area if you look close enough. Now put the shifter on and if you have to use a hammer carefully once everything is lined up. I used my ratchet extension again with the hammer because it had a large enough opening at the end to go around the star pattern and only knock the shifter on to the bolt.

Ok, put the plugs and alignment thing back on, attach the three clips.

Take it for a spin now! The throw reduction is a comfortable 20% or so, makes the car feel sportier without being to hard on your tranny. For $30 or so it's a good mod.
