The stock inlet
is narrow and restrictive. Plus, I like the look of the Forge/Samco
one. It isn't cheap but I think it's worth it. In conjunction
with my CAI the turbo has no trouble spooling up in record time now that it
can breathe properly.
Now, one thing is this reduced that
WHOOSH sound I was getting when I shifted after installing my CAI. That's
because of a lot of reasons, mostly the angle of the new Samco pipe
though. You still get the sound but it isn't as loud. However your
turbo sounds like a damned monster under your hood because of the big tube that
is feeding it air now. Woot woot!
Equipment:
Tools:
-
Metric Torx bits
-
Screwdrivers
-
Pliars
-
Beer
Installation:
Put the car on
ramps or jackstands. You need to get under it for some parts of this install.
Take all the hoses off the top of the
stock tube that goes from the MAF to the metal turbo inlet. Most are those
annoying VW clips. I like to get them off by sticking a screwdriver in the
clamped area and turning it to pry them apart. Then I open them up with
pliars.

Now get under the car and look for
the metal inlet. There is a bolt holding it to the turbo. It is a
SIZE 5 METRIC ALLEN KEY. Bad picture but you get the idea. Also note
the tube on the inlet, you gotta remove this too. I pried it off without
really doing anything to the clamp since getting one of those clamps off under
the car would be hell. Then I pulled the tube up after everything was off
and removed the clamp.

Now patiently wiggle the tube around
until you can pull it out. I didn't have to remove anything else to do
this. This is where the beer comes into play, it may take a few minutes to
get it free. This is a comparison pic of the stock unit out of the car
next to the Samco.

Now the suck part: getting the
Samco back on the turbo. Put that hose you took off the metal inlet on now
and tighten a hose clamp around it. This is eaiser than doing it from
under the car.
Push that inlet down there now!
All I can say is that I'm glad I have long arms, you really gotta squeeze it
down in there and then reach under the CAI to push it into the turbo.
Again, patience will pay off. You have to make sure the inlet is all the
way on the turbo. ***Don't forget to put a hose clamp on the end
first and line it up so that the screw points down to the ground so you can
tighten it!**** Go back under the car and verify that it's on
correctly. Once you get it in place tighten the hose clamp until you can't
anymore, VERY TIGHT is key here.
Now attach the MAF block to the other
end of the inlet and tighten that hose clamp. You get to reconnect all 5
tubes and parts now, yah! The strange circle piece broke me like a twig
getting hit by a tractor trailer. The Samco hose was to damn small and it
took me way longer than it should have to get it in. But, after a tiny bit
of Mobile 1 synth lube it went in and I tightened the hose clamp on. Put
everything else on too. Wheee....

And....

It's a good idea to make sure you put
everything back on right, or your engine will probably do something bad like
die. ;)
When I first test drove this after
installing it the car was pushing less boost by about 1 PSI, but that went away
after my next ride around the block at turbo screaming way to high speeds.
This is a great mod,
enjoy!
